Amid all the other bad news being released from retail and restaurant chains lately, Orlando-based Darden Restaurants appeared to have some of its own this past week. The proprietors of Red Lobster and several other concepts will open fewer restaurants in 2010 than its already scaled-down numbers for this year, according to a report from the Orlando Sentinel.
The problem doesn’t appear to be so much that fewer people are expected to eat at Darden’s restaurants, but that the number of retail developments where those restaurants would open is declining along with the economy. Despite the deepening recession, Darden maintains that it is opening new restaurants at a rate higher than other large chains.
